Down syndrome has not changed what we do as a family. Solito and I have always loved to travel, hike, and bike. In turn we have continued with those things and taken Owen along on all of our adventures. He loves his bike trailer, wears his helmet easily, and can be heard laughing on every bike ride we take. He's been to DE, MD, WI, IN, MI, OH, PA, CO, NV, CA, ND, SD, MT, HI, 2 Canadian provinces (Manitoba, Alberta), and Mexico (Cancun). This fall he'll be able to cross FL off his list too when we visit his Auntie Diana. He's been on planes, in the car, and on a train. We decided before he was born that if we could swing it, Owen would see the world and that's what we continue to do.
Make decisions for YOUR child based on YOUR child, not what someone else is doing. Advice is great, but it doesn't mean you have to take it. I know all too well how easy it is to compare my kiddo to others, but that does no one any good. I am setting Owen up for his own success by taking into account his learning style and his preferences. What works for one person might not work for others and that is just fine.
